REAL club meeting! Monday 20th September

None of this Virtual stuff! A reminder that we are having our first real club meeting in 18 months on Monday 20th Sept at Mays Bounty (Basingstoke Sports and Social Club, Fairfields Road) starting 7:45. Hope that you can make it for a general natter/catch up and to meet (potential) new members and new calls. Everyone welcome.

July Club Zoom event on Mon 19th

The monthly Club meeting will be on Monday 19th July, starting at 8 pm BST. An invite to the Zoom event has been sent out to members – contact the Club Secretary (Alan G3UQW alan.ball at basingstoke-network-services.co.uk) if you haven’t received this.

We don’t have a scheduled talk this month so the evening will be a general rag chew and catch up.

The current plan is to restart physical meetings on Monday 20th September, at May’s Bounty as usual. It’ll be good to see everyone again, plus newcomers, so please make a note of this date in your diary.

Club Zoom meeting Monday 21st June

June’s monthly event will include a tak by Roger G0ROG (previous BARC member) on Grid Tracker, described as a warehouse of amateur radio information presented in an easy-to-use interface, from live traffic decodes, logbooks, real-time spot reports, weather, current solar conditions and more! Timed at about 30 minutes, Roger may then drift into other sporadic-e tools that he uses to help him be active at the right times or point in the right direction.

Zoom log in details will be published to members shortly ahead of the event.

Monthly Zoom meeting – Monday 17th May

For May we have a talk by Alan G3UQW entitled “A brief history of wireless propaganda”, followed by a general chat. As usual the Zoom invite wil be sent out to members a day or so before the event – please ensure that your screenname identifies you clearly, e.g. “Paul G4CSD” rather than “Pauls iPad” otherwise you will end up stranded in the Zoom Waiting Room.

The meeting will start at 8pm with the Zoom link open a ew minutes earlier.

April Zoom event on Mon 19th

Continuing our run of lockdown Zoom events, Paul G4CSD will give a presentation on observing meteors using reflections from the GRAVES radar transmitter at 143.05 MHz.

The meeting starts at 8pm BST and the link will be published on the club’s GROUPS.IO discussion board a couple of days beforehand.  Make sure that your personal ID clearly identifies you – preferably first name and call sign.  Otherwise you will end up locked in the Waiting Room!

BARC monthly Zoom meeting, Monday 15 March

Our very own Bob Derham M0LSV will be giving a talk entitled “Aircraft Radio Systems” which will cover the different uses of radio for aviating, navigating and communicating, both in commercial and light aircraft.

The meeting proper will start at 8 pm with Zoom access available from a few minutes earlier. The access details are shown below, but please make sure that your Screen Name is recognisable by the Host. “Fred’s laptop” is unlikely to make it past the Zoom Waiting Room, but “Paul G4CSD” will be straight in …. I hope! To edit your screen name for a particular meeting, click on the bottom of the screen to bring up the Participants icon and select that, and then click on your current name to modify it.

February BARC meeting

Our monthly Zoom meeting will be on Monday 15th February and will start with a recording of the John Rogers M0JAV talk entitled “Ofcom Licence changes EMF 2020”. This relates to the Ofcom proposal to require all amateur radio licensees to comply with the ICNIRP general public limits on EMF exposure. The RSGB has been working to identify the implications of this for individual amateurs and is developing a spreadsheet program to help you comply with the changes. More information can be found at EM Field Exposure – Radio Society of Great Britain – Main Site : Radio Society of Great Britain – Main Site (rsgb.org)

Following the talk we will try out a couple of trial calculations using a draft version of the spreadsheet to see how easy it is to use in practice and the sort of results it produces.

January Club Meeting

Given the continuing COVID situation BARC club meetings will remain as Zoom events. The next meeting will be on January 18th with Liz M0LIS giving a talk entitled “Lasers – Only for the Evil Genius?” The meeting invite will be mailed to those on the club’s GROUPS.IO list a few days before the event.

Upcoming BARC events

BARC’s main December meeting will be on Monday 21st December, the third Monday of the month, as usual.  This will be another virtual Zoom meeting and the access details will be emailed to members later this week.  Otherwise, we will be sticking with the traditional Christmas quiz format and hopefully you will all have a glass of festive cheer to hand to help even up the odds.

The following meeting will be another Zoom event on January 18th with Liz M0LIS giving a talk entitled “Lasers – Only for the Evil Genius?”
